Florida saltwater is among the most corrosive environments on earth. Three invisible forces work on your pilings 24 hours a day.
Shipworms (Teredo navalis) and gribbles are the biggest threat to wood pilings in Southwest Florida. They tunnel inside where you can't see them, leaving a thin shell that looks fine — until it collapses under the weight of your dock.
Constant wet-dry cycles at the waterline pull salt deep into wood and accelerate corrosion in steel. The splash zone — between high and low tide — deteriorates fastest on nearly every piling.
Algae, barnacles, and fungi trap moisture against the piling and promote decay above the waterline, where the wood stays damp in Florida's humidity. They also hide borer entry holes from casual inspection.
Pressure-treated Southern yellow pine is still the most common piling in Naples — and the most affordable way to build. Treated to marine-grade standards, wood pilings typically last 15–25 years. The catch is that "treated" isn't one thing: pilings need the highest retention ratings, and in Naples' warm, borer-heavy waters, plan on the low end of that range.
Wood remains popular because it's cost-effective and easy to work with — and because a failing wood piling can often be sistered, jacketed, or replaced individually rather than forcing a full rebuild.
Composite and PVC pilings are engineered from fiberglass-reinforced plastic or solid vinyl — nothing for marine borers to eat, nothing to rot or saturate. In Florida saltwater they routinely deliver 25–50+ years, most backed by 25-year warranties.
With no wood to tunnel through and no steel to corrode, composite is effectively immune to the forces that kill wood — which is why it's become the default for new docks and full piling replacements across Naples. It costs more upfront (about $1,800–$4,000 per piling versus $1,500–$3,000 for marine-grade wood), but pays back in maintenance savings. One trade-off: it flexes more than wood or concrete, so engineering and pile spacing matter.
Prestressed concrete pilings are the workhorse of deep-water and commercial projects, lasting 30–50 years in Florida saltwater. Concrete is immune to borers and rot; lifespan is limited more by hardware and connections than by the concrete itself.
The weakness is cracking. Hairline cracks let saltwater reach the steel strands inside, which corrode and push the concrete apart from within — so concrete must be driven carefully. For a residential Naples dock, concrete is usually overkill unless you're in deep water or lifting a heavy boat.
Steel pilings — H-piles or pipe piles driven into the seabed — offer 30–50 years, but only with protection. Bare steel in Florida saltwater corrodes aggressively, especially in the splash zone. The pilings that last decades carry quality coatings and cathodic protection — sacrificial zinc or aluminum anodes that corrode in place of the steel.
Aluminum resists corrosion better without anodes, which is why you'll see it supporting aluminum docks and floating structures. It costs more than steel and can suffer galvanic corrosion if connected to dissimilar metals.
Steel and aluminum are rarely the first choice for a standard residential dock, but they're the right answer for deep water, heavy boat-lift loads, and floating systems.

Piling failure happens at the waterline, out of sight. Watch for these signs, and have a licensed contractor investigate before loading the dock further.

25–50+ years. With no wood to rot and no cellulose for marine borers to eat, they're effectively immune to the forces that destroy wood. Most carry 25-year warranties, and field performance regularly exceeds that.
Concrete pilings typically last 30–50 years, and steel pilings 30–50 years when protected with coatings and cathodic protection. Unprotected steel in aggressive saltwater corrodes far faster, especially in the splash zone.
Marine borers — particularly Teredo navalis (shipworm) and gribbles — tunnel invisibly inside the piling, leaving a thin shell that can collapse without warning. Saltwater saturation, wood-decay fungi, and algae accelerate deterioration at the waterline.
Signs include a hollow sound when tapped, honeycombing or holes at the waterline, large cracks, a piling that leans or moves under load, and a deck that feels spongy. Annual borer inspections using probe testing are the most reliable way to catch damage early.
Fiberglass wraps and concrete pile jackets at the waterline, proper pile caps and drainage, cathodic protection for steel, and annual inspections can add a decade or more — especially on wood pilings, buying years before a full replacement is needed.
